Cosmetology Journal ~ Day 14 ~ I Kicked It Square In Its Layered Behind ~ 8/8/13
I'm on Cloud 8 today. and I mean that. Its 8/8 and I'm on Cloud 8.
We started the day with some last minute theory on haircutting and then we took the 4th quiz. I got 9 out of 10 for 90%. There were some thermal styling questions mixed in also and I missed the one on what we use to test the iron on. Choice 1 said tissue paper and choice 2 said fabric. We use the sani strips (neck strips) to test them and I thought I recalled her saying they were some sort of stretchy fabric and I was thinking tissue paper was like the gift kind that would burn easily. So I chose 2 and got it wrong. But that's not something for me to worry about. I know to test it on the sani strip or a paper towel like we did at the old school. The main thing is to test it to see if it burns the paper before you put it on the hair. So I'll take another 90%.
I believe that gives me 90, 90, 80, 90 for the 4 haircutting quizzes and I got 95% on the Nails.
After the quiz Mrs C went and got the stoves, Marcel irons without cords, and pressing combs. And she demo'd it and let the others take a few swipes with the comb. I wasn't in any hurry to touch that comb. In April of 2001 I lightly burned a 9 year old girl twice with one tooth of the comb. So I was working up the Dare to get over it.
So I had my set up with Naomi the textured haired manikin. Mine had some really nice tight curls. Some got theirs shampooed before break but Mrs C told me to Belly Up To The Bar (The dispense area of the salon area) and go get some Wella Brilliance Shampoo & Conditioner for coarse hair and something called HCO detangler that was pink. But by the time I got back it was break time.
I came back from break, shampooed the pretty lady and got to work blow drying her hair like I'd done before on people with the comb attachment. And then It was time. I grabbed that comb and showed Mrs C that I knew how to do it just like she showed. I was going over it and under it. Then I grabbed the tiny marcel iron and bam made my first figure 8 curl in 12 years and I called her over to look at it. She split it and said it was really good. So I did another and then she said to get to work flat ironing them. So for the first time in my life I picked up a flat iron (not counting the one I tried to use on the wig manikin I had) and I went to town. I did a few smooth passes. Then I started making Marcel 6 curls with it. I was feeling it. At our school if we ever have a service to do that we don't feel comfortable doing we have the option to opt out. So if I were confronted again with the possibility of having to use a hot tool on a child I could say no. But today I decided that because I want to do it all I'm not going to let the past fear win. Bring me the challenge. Let me take care of the people others don't want. I'll make mistakes but I'll be ready this time.
So on Lunch I posted to Facebook "Redemption :) Feeling Renewed"
I was feeling pretty good but at the same time I had a haircutting rubric test staring me in the face.
So I listened to my songs Dare and then The Touch
Dare
The Touch
I walked into that room. I followed my set up & sanitation procedures, got Penelope with longer hair wet down at the bowl, and I went to work. She gave us 1 hour. We were allowed to choose any of the cuts we had done except the one length trim unless you combined that with another cut. I decided to go for the one that would leave her hair pretty much still long and I chose the Square Layers that we learned this week where we bring all the hair "Behind" the head and make a virtual square with it. Its a challenge to cut but it was one I had memorized enough to get through as fast as I could. I owned it. I kicked that cut Square In Its Behind and I finished in time and she liked it. As she was checking I only saw a few stray hairs.
Then we sat for a few minutes and talked over some things because she was so proud of our group. We got caught up. Then came break.
Since we were caught up after break it was student services time. The new student who just came back from a leave asked if anyone wanted to cut her shorter graduated bob a bit. At first S was going to do it and I started to blow dry Penelope so I could get a picture. But when I saw that he was working on C I asked if she wanted me to give it a try and she accepted. So I went to work on my client. I sat her in the chair and did my little consultation bit for Mrs C.. A wanted her top area to have a bit less weight and not really a trim on anything else so Mrs C said she'd show me how to use the thinning shears. So I walked A over to the bowl and gave her a shampoo and scalp massage that she said was really good.
Then I got started blow drying but Mrs C came over to show me how to do it better. And I'm ok with her showing me. Then she showed me some parting tricks and sectioning tricks for doing the thinning. Not to spoil her trade secret if she doesn't want me to but she parted off diamond shapes and made little ponytails. She cut a few pieces and then let me give it a try and she walked me through it so I cut at least 80% of the snips with the thinning shears. The hair was still damp so it was time for more blow drying. So she showed me some more and then I noticed that when she was twirling her round brush she was also bouncing it up and down and that was my ah ha moment. As soon as I tried that I was rockin. And then I got to do a little bit of flat ironing. Then it was clean up time. I thanked her for letting me work on her. I haven't quite gotten in with the others in the class. I still have the issue of not having the things to talk about that they do.
Earlier in the day A had asked if anyone could give her a ride and she only needed to go across the street to the mall cuz she got a job there. And I said I would.
As it turns out She also had 300 hours at another school before and she used to work in the deli of a different store of the same chain of grocery stores I worked for. So I capped the day off by talking to her and now I've got a buddy in the classroom. I think now when she goes to take her smoke breaks I'm gonna go with her. :)
No pictures today. I took a picture of what I did with my purple heart bracelet but I didn't have the memory card in so its stuck on the camera until I find the cord. But I'll probably ask A for a pic :)

Day 13 ~ Reggie For Short ~ 8/7/13
Cosmetology Journal ~ Day 13 ~ Reggie For Short ~ 8/7/13
In the morning we went over theory to get ready for today's quiz.
Then we got set up to do another Square Male cut like yesterday's
After break we took the quiz and I got 2 of 10 wrong for 80% so I passed.
Then we got to work doing the cut. I was going along just fine or so I thought. I wasn't quite holding my fingers right on the center of the back but somehow I was managing to cut the rest of that section right when she checked. So she got me back on track and I got around to finish the right side and then started the left back and worked my way around to the side. Then she checked again and somehow I didn't have the left corner right. I guess it was because I was overdirecting more of the corner than I should have been so the spot next to the corner going towards the center back needed to be held out from its spot more than back towards the square. So I got that fixed and through the side. Then I had her go through the top with me since she was confused about it herself yesterday. She had us doing a smaller section than the video was showing and everyone got lost because we skipped the blending. But anyway I would have been done sooner but I got as far as the point where I need to take the top out to the sides and clean up the leftovers. But it was lunch time.
After lunch we got out the clippers and went over theory on them and oiling and such. Then we watched Linda demo on the video a clipper cut on a manikin and some Shear / Scissor over comb.
Then after break we finished the video where she did a cut on a man. Then Mrs. C started to demo and then had us each come up and take some passes on her demo manikin with the clippers. Then using some of the used manikins the school had we did our own clipper cuts with a shear cut on top.
My manikin is one of the younger girl sized heads. I named her Regena Regency. I named this entry Reggie for short as in a nickname but also that she got a short clipper cut.
I put her back in the cabinet to do the cleaning and at the end I asked to get her back out for a picture. Because she went in with wet hair it got mushed by other manikins and her hair kinda dried funky. But I took the picture for my portfolio anyway and to share with you.
Today's style is 2 Claire's bow barettes crossed to make a flower shape. I put them on my braid last night for a quick picture and then today I put them on my loose unbraided hair.

Day 12 ~ Penny & Marcel Curl Up Together ~ 8/6/2013
Cosmetology Journal ~ Day 12 ~ Penny & Marcel Curl Up Together ~ 8/6/2013
We spent the first part doing theory on haircutting. Going over some of the other tools like clippers and trimmers. That took us until break.
After break we learned how to do Marcel Curls with the Marcel Curling iron. A marcel iron is the type that has 2 handles and not just the little spring loaded trigger like button. To use them you have to hold both handles and the covers on the handles turn so you can spin the iron in your hands while you are clicking the iron open and closed. I learned this before but I was using stove heated irons. This time I was using my new electric corded iron.
I just want to say that this is probably one of the biggest differences in doing this now versus then. My hands were no where near in shape to use anything in 2000. I managed to learn it then but it was a pain in the palms. I've been talking about getting my hands in shape for the past 2 months and I wasn't sure if people understood what I meant. I've been doing these home rollers sets, several over the weekend that I've been talking about on Facebook. Its things like this that I know I need. And I'm glad I am doing them. Not only is it helping my passion stay on track but its working these hands. I didn't make perfect curls but I did not struggle with holding or turning that iron this time. It didn't hurt. I got a few good curls done on Penelope 2's longer hair and Mrs C liked them. Then we had a non graded technical rubric on them so I shampooed and then blow dried Penelope 2 and had to make a few curls. When it came time to do the curls I was having so much fun that I ended up going all the way down the middle parting to the nape and then said "Were we supposed to do just a few curls?"
So then lunch came and I used my phone to post to FB that I was felling Accomplished.
After lunch we watched Linda's video on the Square Male haircut. Basically its the same cut we did yesterday except yesterday we were bringing all the hair to behind the head and making a virtual square there. For this version you do a square on the two sides also and also raise a square above the head.
With the video and setting up we didn't get started until after break. But after break I came in there and I owned it again. And I think I finished first. Tomorrow we do it again a bit shorter before we move on to clippers. I did accidently cut his left chin area a tad shorter but I kinda realized it when I did it. I followed a shorter piece of hair thinking it was my guide. But tomorrow's cut will fix it. The fact that I know I did it without having to be told is good.
That makes 13 haircuts so far.
Its really feeling real now. I'm really finding out that I do have skills. There's a ways to go but I've got something to hone now. I can follow the recipe now.
By the way its kinda fitting that today is 8 - 6 because in Marcel curling you're making either figure 8 or figure 6 curls.
Here's my Marcel curls as they looked after lunch
Today I pinned up yesterday's braid with plastic pins that kinda look like a figure 8 and put my purple crochet type scrunchies around it.

Day 11 ~ Round & Square ~ 8/5/13
Cosmetology Journal ~ Day 11 ~ Round & Square ~ 8/5/13
Haircutting Week 2 has begun.
We started this morning with going over Smart goals. Which for some reason was ringing a bell with me.
When Mrs C went to the flip chart and wrote the letters out veritically that's when it started coming back to me. S.M.A.R.T. = Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reasonable, Timely. Yup the same stuff I'd been listening to at the meetings I was going to as the Cultural Council Leader at the grocery store. I think I caught her off guard when I started guessing the letters.
After that we got to work doing the Round Layers cut on Penelope 1. We rewatched the Linda video as we were doing them since this was her version and not Mrs C's. Got as far as the top section and break came.
After break I got through the whole thing with only one tiny bit of help from Mrs. C. Then right as I was finishing up she had a bangs cut video going and while I didn't watch it I did have time to have her show me so I could do it right before lunch. Basically it was long bangs that are mid nose length with some point cutting.
After lunch we watched the Square Layers cut video and then since Ben still has longer hair we did it on him. There's also a Square Male Layers cut but that's for tomorrow or later. I had no trouble with this one except I did cut my left index finger where my second inner knuckle wrinkle is while doing Palm to Palm. Meaning my left palm is facing me with my fingers pointing up and then I turn my right hand to have the palm face the other palm with the fingers pointing down. I was only on the second cut when I did it. It was right before break so I had the whole break to get it to stop bleeding.
After break I came back and while I was the last to finish I owned that cut and did it without help.
Then Ben got some blow drying and then we had to stop for the extra Monday sanitation.
Awesome day :)
We also had a returning student that was on leave so we have someone new to us.
Today's style was a braid that I had about 3 minutes to do and somehow it came out nice. I put my flower bands on it.

Day 10 ~ Penelope Two Gets a 90's Do
Cosmetology Journal ~ Day 10 ~ Penelope Two Gets a 90's Do ~ 8-2-13
Thirteen years ago on 8-2-2000 I parked in a parking lot and walked into a place that changed my life. I had my first day at my first cosmetology school. Its now 13 years later and I have just completed day 10 and my second week of the new school.
And we ended this week by finishing week one of haircutting.
Since its Friday today was celebration day so we gathered in the salon area (Guest services start at 9:30, we start 9:00). I got a paper frog with my name and 100% on it for perfect attendance last week. Should get another something next week.
We had one graduate today. And then it was time to dance. So once again when it came time to join in my but was up and out of the chair and I wiggled my hips and stepped the wrong way and turned the wrong way and I had fun dancing.
Then we got back to the room and took Haircutting quiz #2. Once again I got 9 out of 10 for 90% as I did yesterday. Then a couple students retook yesterday's quiz and we went over the answers. And that got us to break time.
After break Mrs C did her demo of the Round Layered aka Uniform Layered cut that uses 90 degree positions from all parts of the head to make a circle shape. Thus my 90's title pun.
She showed us her way of doing it where she starts by trimming a one length trim and then makes sure she doesn't cut her top guide any less than how long the bottom hair is so that more length won't come off.
Then we went to work trying it. We used Penelope 2 that already had a one length cut. I got my guide on top done and got the first front section done and then I got lost. I could not see the guide in the next section. And I had to wait for her to finish helping the others before she could over to me. When I do need her I at least go watch what she is showing the others to see if I can get it. So she came over and showed it to me plain as day walked away and I tried again and I could not see it. So lunch time came. I had my cell phone with me today and I had a song shared to my FB status called Dare. So I clicked on the link and listened to it.
After lunch I struggled some more with that front right section. She came back over and showed it to me again and I found it and started going again. Then I got lost again and she came over to help but the problem for the past day or so is when she comes to help she has a habit of cutting and cutting and cutting and suddenly I don't have anything to cut. So I stopped her before she went too far this time and said let me do it because I don't learn if I don't do it. I told her that was part of my problem last time. I would be trying to get it and be out on the floor working on a cut and the instructor would come over and pretty much finish the haircut because of time issues. So I didn't learn. And I only had a few chances to try cutting as it was. I think 3. So although she got a little miffed at me because I was upset a bit she backed off. Then we all stopped for a bit to watch Linda in the video cut the same cut but starting doing it a different way. Then it was break time.
In my notebook here I wrote "Can I finish?"
During break I listened to the Dare song again. I'll add info on to the end of this entry.
After break I went in there and took control and I saw what needed to be cut and its not attached anymore.
Then we were to start Linda's method on Penelope 1 who received the Graduated bob yesterday. But I only got as far as the bangs guideline before it was time to start sanitation and such.
Great day, week, 2 weeks. I also got my name tag today. I'll get a picture soon. But it has my name on it. Not just a sticker. :)

Lyrics
Sometimes when your hopes have all been shattered
Dare - dare to believe you can survive
You hold the future in your hand
Dare - dare to keep all of your dreams alive
It's time to take a stand
And you can win, if you dare
Everybody's trying to break your spirit
Keeping you down
Seems like it's been forever
But there's another voice if you'll just hear it
Saying it's the last round
Looks like it's now or never
Out of the darkness you stumble into the light
Fighting for the things you know are right
Dare - dare to believe you can survive
The power is there at your command
Dare - dare to keep all of your dreams alive
It's time to take a stand
And you can win, if you dare
Dare - dare to believe you can survive
You hold the future in your hand
Dare - dare to keep all of your dreams alive
The power is there at your command
Dare - dare to keep all your love alive
Dare to be all you can be
Dare - 'cause there is a place where dreams survive
And it's calling you on to victory

And you can win, if you dare
Dare - dare to believe you can survive
You hold the future in your hand
Dare - dare to keep all of your dreams alive
The power is there at your command
Dare - dare to keep all your love alive
Dare to be all you can be
Dare - 'cause there is a place where dreams survive
And it's calling you on to victory

Day 9 ~ Penelope Has Graduated ~ 8/1/13
Cosmetology School Journal ~ Day 9 ~ Penelope Has Graduated ~ 8/1/13
We started today with theory review on haircutting and then we took a quiz. I got 9 out of 10 for 90%.
As usual the one I was confused on is the one I missed but its one I won't miss again.
After the quiz we started to watch a video with Linda demonstrating the graduated bob cut which is like an A-Line Bob or is one.
Break came and then after break we finished the video. Then we set up using Penelope #1 from Monday's one length cuts and we gave her an even shorter one length cut to start with. Except that I thought I had started her cut at the bottom of her next and it turns out I was touching the calmp ring. So after I got through about half of the back Mrs. C saw that I hadn't cut enough and then I got to work on the big trim. I got it done before lunch. I was a bit behind others but I did extra cutting so it wasn't too bad.
After lunch Mrs. C did her own demo of the cut and then we went about cutting the graduated bobs. I was doing just fine with mine. I got all the way up the back and into the top and even into the right side. Then she said it was break time so i went over to see her showing C how to do hers and that's when I realized that she wasn't holding the top hair as far up as I was. So all through break I was kicking myself because I knew I cut too much. But at the end of break I perked up a bit because I knew Mrs C would take care of me.
So I walked in there and said "Could you come over and check this, I think I messed up on top here." and she said something about how she was already checking it and it was fine. So I went to work on the other side and when I got up to the top again she came over to tell me I wasn't holding the hair down by the other hair and that's when I told her that I had done that to the other side and that was what I wanted her to check. So we got it all starightened out, no big deal. and then I got to work blowing her dry. As I said a few minutes ago, at least now I know how to do both versions. And that was another nice ending to a fun day. I'm now up to 7 haircuts done. Tomorrow we're supposed to do the round cut and that will be fun.
Style of the day was a tail with my purple pom pom bands from Gymboree.
And here are the after pictures of Penelope's Graduated Bob.

Day 8 ~ Penelope Squared ~ 7/31/13
Cosmetology Journal ~ Day 8 ~ Penelope Squared ~ 7/31/13
Day 3 of Haircutting
These days are flying by so fast that its getting hard to remember what happened before or after a break.
That being said today was long length square layer cut day. In other words all the hair is brought straight up and cut even, kinda the reverse of doing a straight trim when it hangs down.
First we watched the video with a lady instructor named Linda demonstrating the cut.
After break we got started using Monday's Penelope. I went to work pretty well with it and understood what I was supposed to do but at first I had my manikin up too high because I had both extenders still on the clamp from the other trim. So once Mrs. C told me to try it lower away I went. The problem is we aren't cutting enough off to really see anything to cut because of all the layers. So it was taking me time to check and recheck if I needed to cut something. About halfway through we had a visit from the Area and Regional people and they spent like 15 minutes talking to us. Then I finished my second side and third of four sections and as I went to start the last section Mrs. C comes over to correct my partings and she starts fixing them up and it dawned on me that she thought I was done and about to start the cut over again since we were going to do it again. So I said I haven't cut the last section yet and we got it figured out LOL.
So I got it done.
After lunch I came in confident and ready to go. I took Penny to the bowl and soaked her again to save myself some time. Got her sectioned out. Dropped the front guide and went to cut the 1/2 inch shorter. I cut it and when I went to make the guide up top it was barely shorter so I redid the front guide a little bit shorter so Instead of 1/2 it was more like 3/4 inch. I got to work cutting the top and sides on the right and I actually saw something to cut. Then I got to the back right where I'm supposed to start taking angled sections kinda like a pie or wheels spokes and I was grabbing the subsections just fine but I couldn't see where to cut. I kept combing it over and over and meanwhile everyone else is finishing their second cuts and she's telling them they can go ahead and blowdry to look at them before we move on to the short cut.
I'm here on this blog to tell the truth so I'm going to. My frustration with falling behind started growing and had me muttering to myself until I couldn't take it anymore and I just said I give up and put the tools down. Mrs. C then came over to check and that's when she pointed out that none of that hair in back was reaching. Then she went to do the other side and asked me if I had taken a half inch and I said yes. She asked me something about how I do it trying to see if I used the comb marks and I pointed out how I did it and that its halfway between the end and the 1. I didn't say I took more than that. Anyway she barely cut anything on the side and then went to the back left and there was nothing reaching there either. So she said I was done.
After break I got to start on blow drying and I'm glad I did. She showed me how I was starting from the top at first and just needed to start at the bottom first and just go dig in with my hands and not fuss so much with a brush. Then I got to work sectioning for the round brush and I had me a ball with that round brush today. I had that hair lifting on base all the way to the top meaning if this is up, out, and down \ | / (If this were sideways like an E ) I had that hair held on the up angle which gives it lots of volume just like when I do that with rollers. And today I got all of the hair, even on top. We didn't get to the shorter cut or the irons today.
But I'm still rating this a succesful day. If the hair doesn't reach that's not my fault. Bottom line is I learned things today and I like what I learned. Maybe its better that I blow my top today than a few weeks from now. I'm still purging. There's still leftovers in me from the old school that I need to get past. And I will. I'm glad I have her to help me.
Today's style was a banded tail with purple bands. I then put my purple velvet like scrunchie at the top. I didn't get a picture.
But I have this picture of the workshop class. I took it at the end of the day without a flash.
