Day 163, 164, 165 ~ 350 Vs 350 ~ 3/28/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 163, 164, 165 ~ 350 Vs 350 ~ 3/28/14

In Michigan it takes 350 hours of school to be legal to work on the public with instructors. I'm now looking at the second Legal in 353 hours. That's 10 weeks and half a day left.
"Weren't you just in here for your tour?" Mrs S said something like that the other day when she called me in to chat about my progress for 1125 hours / 75%. I was thinking that she was going to mention something about me being behind in my practicals but all I heard were words of praise. I was the one to bring up that I needed to catch up on them. She knows what I've been doing to try to bring people in. She's seen the change in me from the person who was still trying to get over the past failure and take the chance to the person I am now. I still don't believe how much has happened. I remember sitting in that lobby when I walked in for the tour and looking at the ceiling towards the performance floor. There's a space between that wall and the higher ceiling. I was listening to the music and noticing it was a bit different than the Kroger music. But I was also wondering what its going to be like to be on the other side of that wall. Will I be ok? Will I redeem myself? Will I be doomed to fumble again. Will I be able to twirl an iron or will they still be too bulky or heavy? Will I actually get to finish haircuts without the instructor taking over? Will my back give me problems from bending over the sinks? It's getting harder to remember some of that old stuff. I have to actually try to remember it. But those thoughts don't have to haunt me anymore. I can actually laugh a bit about them now. They don't hurt. In any case she helped lift some weight off my mind. I'm not behind. The numbers might look big but I'll get what I need. Of course that's thanks to those who are coming in to help.

Ok I started this entry the other day so what I wrote before was then. Now its Monday night and I'm trying to remember what happened for those three days. I was on desk for Wednesday and Friday. On Thursday we took the Haircutting 1 / Principles of Hair Design quiz. I got one wrong for 95%. It was one of those where I knew the answer but the choices were using two words that were both used by the teacher to explain it. So I 50/50'd it and chose wrong. But I thought I was answering a bunch more wrong so when I saw one wrong I was a bit satisfied.  Since I did my rubric on Tuesday it was my turn to work on a manikin while the others took theirs. I did marcel iron curls. We start the Professional Development segment tomorrow with Mrs V. Mrs E and Mrs C will be out on the floor. And its gonna be time to start prepping for the Salon Fair which is Wednesday the 9th. Gotta get my resume in order. Its not quite the same as it was a few months back. At least not from my point of view.

I am now 38. Or 19 again :)

Day 162 ~ Rubrics Square ~ 3/25/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 162 ~ Rubrics Square ~ 3/25/14

1126 Hours
77 Guests

So I hit that hour mark of 1125 for the 75% but I don't have the practicals done to get the Star pin for it. So lets see how long that takes. I've got 374 hours left. That's 10 weeks, 3 days, and 3 hours. 29 of those days are days I can have a guest. The rest are classroom days, Salon fair days, and tomorrow and friday on desk. That's if I don't have another week of desk or dispense coming. If I don't miss a day or have another school closing day those last 3 hours will be on Tuesday June 10th with the celebrating being on Friday the 13th. That's if I have my work done by then.

Tuesday Classroom Day: Day 1 of Rubrics for Haircutting.
A friend that I gave a haircut to on New Years Day came today to be a model for my haircutting rubric test. I cut her hair last time from longer than shoulders to just below in a one length. This time I had to do some sort of layered cut for the test. I could not do a one length trim unless I then did the other cuts after that. My options were a 90 degree Round Layers, a Graduated / Wedge Bob type or a Square layer cut. There's two versions of the square layer to choose from. One being pull the hair straight back from the head and the other being pull it straight up from the head. My friend wasn't trying to go too short and I was trying to help her keep her length where I left it last time. I had my manikin from last Thursday to show her what the straight back square layers looked like. That was the best option because the bottom length is the guide. It does make lots of layers in the back going upward and gives some graduation. But the bottom perimeter stays where it was and so does the sides. With a few exceptions. Any hair that when pulled back passes the guide is going to be cut. So its a matter of if something grew enough to reach past. In this case there was a little bit. I did the cut and met the time the test gives and I passed. But more important to me is that it looked nice on her. As I just stated school will be over soon. So I am being mindful that I need to give nice hairstyles and service to my guests whether its a test or not. I've been very fortunate to meet the friends I have that have had services done. I'd like to continue to see them after I finish school.

This was my last rubric. It seems kinda strange now being on this side of it. When I read those other blogs last year about those other students and they mentioned having to get models for rubrics. Such a funny word too. I know it may sound like a broken record to some but I have accomplished something that I thought I would not be able to do. I was too scared. I think back to my meat department job and trying to get myself to open my mouth to talk to the customers. Looking back at it the best thing that could have happened was for them to rearrange the store a month or so after I started in that department after leaving nights. Because every customer needed help. And for years after that they still did. So it made it easier for me to just open up and ask as they came around the corner from the dairy aisle if they needed help finding anything. And then no matter what it was I went to find it with them. To me it was also a bit of a karma thing. No matter how obscure the item was if I didn't go find it I knew it was going to be asked for really soon after that so I might as well find it. Anyway, I had 6 Rehearsal Rubrics: Relaxers, Male Haircutting, Highlighting, Perm, Haircolor, and Haircutting. For the first two, relaxer and male haircut we were allowed to do them on a manikin. But after that Regency reminded their campuses that they wanted to require we use live models. So I had no choice. And the reality is that its not fair for me to expect other students to let me use them as a model if I'm not willing to be a model myself. I have done some things that I held back from doing to my hair but going shorter is not an option right now. And I don't want layers. But I know that being able to have guests request me was a big factor in coming to Regency. I needed this chance to try this before getting to a salon and possibly failing at bringing models in. 3 out of 4 of my models are people I met in December or later. I was told I had to have a model and I was fortunate enough to have it work out. I'm trying not to say I did it, I did it because the models had to do their part. I am thankful to them. I had a model for a perm. Someone let me squirt dangerous chemicals on their head. That's a scary thing. I'm glad I had some previous chances before the classroom test. I had people let me change the color of their hair. So I'm looking at all these words I keep typing. The huge paragraphs. I guess I just needed to know that people would trust me. That they would give me the chance. I didn't know if I had the talent or skill or speed. But I remember back to the day I got my kit. I don't care which tools may or may not have been the cheap ones or what has or hasn't broken yet. What I do care about is that I wanted the chance to use those tools. I wanted to see if I could make some pretty with them. I've been fortunate to be able to say that I have used all of my tools. I'm happy to say that even includes a diffuser that does not come with my kit. I'm really glad I bought that.

So I guess the bottom line is that yes I have some fear that I'm not going to finish on time. But there are some facts about that. One, I have things I'm going to try to solve that problem. Two, some of you have already offered to help. Three, I'm going to finish no matter what the month is.
I still have a long way to go skill wise. I know that the skills are amped up in the salon. But what I'm realizing is that I don't just have the passion or desire to use my tools. I'm trying not to sound arrogant to say this but I feel like I have talent. Or an eye for it. But I do still have some hurdles to overcome. Only these days when I think about them I just kinda laugh about them. They aren't hundred foot high hurdles. More like the size of a mirror....

Day 161 ~ Getting Practical With The Numbers, How You Can Help ~ 3/24/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 161 ~ Getting Practical With The Numbers, How You Can Help ~ 3/24/14

1119 Hours

What do I have left to do? I will answer that question for those who want to help.

This week on Performance Floor I am working the Reception Desk so I had some time to look at the computer and look at what I really need to get done. I will need help with this. But I think its possible still to get this done on time. But for the most part my main concern is that I do what I'm supposed to to bring people in. Not only you who are reading this who are already doing so well at helping me but with the wamrer weather and such I need to get my act back in gear. I have my last classroom rubric / test tomorrow and its for haircutting. Unless something changes I have a friend coming to be a model. I've got Salon Fair coming up on the 9th and I have a friend as a model for that. Aside from that the classroom stuff will pretty much go into a bit of theory mode aside from the second nails portion. But there's no rubric for that. And then there will be another Mock State Board test right before I'm scheduled to graduate.

So here are the numbers in image form first

I know that's a bit hard to read if you don't know what it means. In simple terms I used blue ink to write the numbers of the items that I do not have enough of yet. But the important numbers as far as this goes are that I need
18 more Haircuts
128 Hairstylings - This is one that you'll have questions about.
27 Haircolorings
23 Perms or Relaxers - a combo of
Manicure & Pedicure is a tricky one because while it says I have enough for the milestone I still have to get those 35 total of the actual Mani & Pedi and I only have 14. So I need 21 of a combo of those by graduation.
I have the Skin categories done individually but I need those electives. I need 8 of something from that section.

If you want to help me the only way possible is to get yourself to the school or spread the word to people you know. I don't mind young or old, boy, girl, man, woman. If a man wants a pedicure I don't mind. I need practise. Braiding practise. Updo practise. The bottom line is I need help. You may not want something but you'd be surprised who might. I will do my best to take care of anyone who comes to get something. I don't mind doing anything. And there's so much I'd like to try for real. Like pincurls or fingerwaves. I don't want to be stuck with just learning those on a manikin. I want to give someone a pretty style with them. Come have some fun. Or at the least a conditioning treatment. I get a scalp treatment hairstyling credit for that.
Oh and we did just get in a bunch of fun colors of OPI nail polish. If you come for either a mani or pedi you get to keep the polish for free and if you get both you get 2 bottles.
So lets get busy so I can get those Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in April and May filled.
Lets make this happen. :)

Day 157, 158, 159, 160 ~ Great Week ~ 3/22/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 157, 158, 159, 160 ~ Great Week ~ 3/22/14

This week by itself could fill its own car on the Positive Train.
I'm going to keep this as short as possible since its 4 days worth.
On thursday in classroom we did more theory in the morning and then in the afternoon we reviewed the practical for a square layer cut and then we did one on a manikin.

Everyday this week, Wed, Fri, and Sat I had friends as requests. One came to let me try those spirally iron curls from last friday. Another was the first person from the public to come that I had given one of my cards to. She's also the first person with natural curls to have me do a haircut. It was a trim. And another friend came for going a bit darker blonde than the light blonde I had previously done. Yesterday I also practised those curls again on two manikins. I definitely have my technique for those. And am building some speed with those particular curls. Curling them in itself doesn't take much time. What really matters is how thick of a strand I curl at once because too much hair makes it not curl as well or fall faster. So while I might get through the head faster it may not stay very long. Of course hair spray might help with that but that takes practise too to see what works with what hair.
Thank you to all of those who came this week. I learned a lot and enjoyed having you. I got to use my tools to learn lots of pretty. :)

Day 155 & 156 ~ 80's & Mostly Curly ~ 3/18/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 155 & 156 ~ 80's & Mostly Curly ~ 3/18/14

Its been getting a bit harder to keep up with this journal lately but I don't care if I have to write out 7 days worth I'm going to update it eventually. So here goes. Thought I had more than 2 days worth to write but that's only because its been 5 days with the weekend off. When we left off I had finished the Haircolor portion and passed the tests. So that left Friday to finish the week.

Friday Performance Floor:
I did not have a morning guest on friday. I didn't see an assignment posted so I decided to practise something with my Marcel curling iron. I decided to try spirals since I seem to struggle with remembering how to do them. So I went to work and started at the nape and got a row done. Then I started on the second row going up and started turning the iron the opposite way like I believe someone had told me to do.Mrs L came by and asked how I was doing and I said I think I'm doing it right. And then came the game changer. She told me I didn't have to curl the opposite way. Just keeping the part lines in a bricklay was plenty and work smarter not harder. After that I figured out my technique for placing the iron in a good spot to get the hair to feed into it and also figured out how not to put the crimp in the hair with the clamp / shell part of the iron. So then I had some fun finishing those curls. I still had a bit left to do when Mrs D arrived for her roller set. I timed myself, from the time I greeted her to the time she was under the dryer was 1:26 - 2:14 and of that it was 29 minutes to do the rollers. Now maybe that's not fast by standards but when I consider that I used to not get her under the dryer until after 3 I'd say I'm getting there. Another nice day with Mrs D.
After she left I finished the remaining spirals. I overheard Mrs L saying something about the 80's or 80's dancing or something. George Michael and Aretha Franklin's song Knew You Were Waiting was playing. Not sure what was going on but I guess she was challenging us to make 80's hairstyles on a manikin like a mini salon fair. I was about to start doing more iron curls on my ebay used manikin with the multi colored hair so I switched gears and the thought that popped into my mind was the scene from European Vacation when Rusty tells Clark Griswold that he wants his hair cut like the guy with the huge spiked mohawk. So I went and first grabbed the Wella - Flubber Gel and started making my spikes. Then I remembered the Sebastian - Liquid Steel. So I gave them both a try and basically I made Monstar's (from Silverhawks) girlfriend.

Tuesday Classroom Day: Day 1 of Principles of Hair Design / Haircutting 1
Theory Day. Half the day was book review and highlighting. Then we did a few review games. After afternoon break we had an activity in which Mrs E purposely cut short spots in 3 manikins and our 3 groups had to "fix" the haircuts. One of the short spots on my group's manikin was for the bangs. It was shorter than the thickness of my fingers. Since it was a group activity we all pretty much took turns doing something to it. In the end she went fairly short.

So if you're on the blog you can see these pictures of the curls and the 80's spikes if you missed me posting them Friday.

Day 153 & 154 ~ Did I Learn Color? ~ 3/13/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 153 & 154 ~ Did I Learn Color? ~ 3/13/14

1071 Hours
71 Guests

Tuesday Classroom: Half of the class did their haircolor rubrics on Tuesday but I was not among them. My backup model was coming Thursday instead since my first choice couldn't come. Those of us who were not doing the color had to do a head of thermal curls before doing anything else. I did a full head of them on Reese and then played a bit with them with the time left over. I was basically splitting them into chunks and then swirling them into loops and layering them as if I were making an updo except I wasn't pinning them. The morning was theory. More of the same book theory.

Wednesday Performance Floor: I spent the day sitting here chatting with my guest on FB since snow closed the school. I was supposed to do some different colored highlights and streaks. But instead I chatted with her and several others to make additional plans for the upcoming weeks.

Thursday Classroom: Today was quiz day for Haircolor 1. But it was also my turn for the rubric test color application on a live model. The catch is that in order to have my backup model I needed to go get her. She's the same friend who I went and brought on Monday. But because of the snow the roads were icy and the 50 minute trip turned into an hour and 50 minutes. But I called and told them I would be late so no biggie. We got there just before the morning break at 10 and I didn't miss the quiz. This was the second time I was coloring her hair. The first time I lightened her new growth and applied a light violet toner that made her hair silvery. Its what she wanted. But that has since faded out leaving her blonde with brown new growth. Right now the plan is for her to have light blonde hair in October so I was trying to use something that will fade by then. But also giving her the choice of colors she chose a more regular violet color. It happens to be one that another student used on Tuesday so we didn't have to come up with a new formula. The school recently was given more of the Wella shades to use so some of the colors are easier to do now. If you're reading this thank you "K" for the formula.
Thank you to my guest "B" for helping. I got 16 out of 16 on my rubric. But more importantly I got to make some neat colors and a few curls for you.
As for the quiz, I thought I was getting a few more wrong than I did. I ended up getting one wrong and its only because I missed the word Retouch in the question and answered mid strand which is for Virgin and not Retouch since that would be the new growth / roots. So I got a 95%.

As for the title of the entry, this portion of classroom is over. I'm not supposed to be around for either portion again. So as far as learning about mixing colors and what happens with which formula I'm either going to have to try picking brains or do what's probably going to make me happy and that's learn it myself on my own. Its no different than when I wanted to practise perms or cuts. I'm not going to wait until I get into a salon to know what's going to happen. Granted its not going to be the same thing each time. But I'd at least like to know what I'm trying to do. Oh well. I knew that would happen anyway.

Day 152 ~ Take Your Passion And Make It Happen ~ 3/10/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 152 ~ Take Your Passion And Make It Happen ~ 3/10/14

1058 Hours
70 Guests

I finally watched my Flashdance DVD yesterday that my friend Pam sent me. I've also been getting a bit back on track with my music listening. I forgot some of the songs I was listening to last summer. Starting to get them added to my playlists.

Ok Its been about two hours since I wrote that first bit. I was in a great mood when I wrote that but now I've hit a bit of a set back but when I think about what I was going to write about it just reaffirms what I was going to say.

Performance Floor Monday: My friend wanted a deep conditioning treatment but had no way to get to the school so even though its a 50 minute trip to go get her and then get to school I decided to go ahead and make a day of it. I figured that would be better than not having anyone except my manikin and whatever the assignment was. So after I picked her up I had her call the school to let them know I was probably going to be a bit late but I was bringing my guest with me. I don't recall what time I clocked in but I don't think it was more than 10 minutes late. So we made a full day of it. I did the conditioning treatment first and then started a manicure while she was under the dryer. Then we went to lunch together. Then I rinsed her out and did a flat iron thermal. And then it was time. Time to rid myself of the Pedicurse. And I did. I started and finished a pedicure. The first one on a guest. No cancellation this time. And so we had an awesome day and then it was back to the old neighborhood to drop her off.

I have a pretty full schedule this week as far as friends coming to see me at school. I had a model lined up for my classroom rubric but she had to cancel so I'm in scramble mode right now to find someone for tomorrow or Thursday. Otherwise I'm kinda sunk. However I may just go get my friend from today and bring her again since she offered. So we'll see how things turn out. In the meantime things are awesomely positive so I'm still in that mood I was before the set back.

Its simple. I'm going to do what I have to. I'm going to stand in front of my classmates in a few weeks and I'm going to celebrate with them. I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that happens on time. But if there are people who want to come see me I am going to do what I can to make sure they can. If that means I have to drive far enough to only have a half a day that's what I'm going to do. I just have to. I want to. I like to. Its really worth it. I literally will go the extra mile.

Day 149, 150, 151 ~ The Highlights ~ 3/8/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 149, 150, 151 ~ The Highlights ~ 3/8/14

1051 Hours

Thursday Classroom:
Continuing Haircolor 1 -  We did more book theory and highlighting in the morning. After lunch we set up for timing some applications. First we sectioned the manikin into 4. Then we had 8 minutes to do a virgin color application on both the right front and back section. I got mine done in 7.5 minutes. Then we had to do the retouch on the left in 4 minutes. I finished in 4.5.

Then we used swatches of manikin hair to test out using temporary or semi permanent colors and had to tell what our directions were and how it turned out etc. I used a bottle of Jazzing brand Mood Indigo on level 8 blonde. Its a temp color that comes out after one shampoo. It turned out blue with slight green to it since it was on blonde hair.

Friday Performance Floor: I worked the dispense all day and did not find time to work on the foil assignment.

Saturday Performance Floor: I worked dispense again but this time I did a few foils at a time and I used the actual lightener so Lori's hair got actual blonde highlights.

Day 147 & 148 ~ Marching Forward ~ 3/5/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 147 & 148 ~ Marching Forward ~ 3/5/14

1030 Hours
69 Guests

Tuesday Classroom: Haircolor 1 - We have Mrs E again for classroom. In the morning we did mostly talking theory and some highlighting of the book. In the afternoon we had the guest speaker from Wella back again. She was here in the fall and she had us doing the herringbone pattern foils on the top front of the head.   I wrote about that in October for Day 71 http://purplebubbascosmetologyschooljourney.blogspot.com/2013/10/day-71-foiled-again-103013.html
This time she showed some different pictures of color placement patterns. Basically each model has 4 colors used and they are staggered in some way whether its dividing up a triangle section or more than one triangle. Or something else. Then we divided into groups and each was given one of the pictures of a model and we had to describe how we would do something similar on one of our manikins. We didn't actually do it.

Wednesday Performance Floor: My turn in Dispense Room. I'm dispensing products and washing towels this week. The Wella speaker was on the floor this morning like she was last time but we weren't doing an assignment with her like then. Our assignment was simply a full head of foils. The lady was only there to help us out if we had a guest who was getting color. Mrs V told us to get on FB and try to get guests in but I couldn't because I was in dispense. I also did not get any foils done because I was too busy doing the job of dispense. I ripped at least 300 foils in half. Maybe on Friday I'll get something done. Or Saturday.

In the meantime I'm trying to stay focused. I'm trying to refocus. The other day reminded me that I still have a lot to learn. I need to figure out these colors. I need to be able to type out 4/75 or 3/9 and know what that is. And then I need to know what happens if I mix those two. Along with all the other combos. The problem is I have to learn that hands on somehow. Either I have to make myself some sort of fill in the blank or matchup worksheet or I have to actually buy them and try them. I gotta think of something because its getting annoying. If I'm not supposed to know these yet I wish someone would tell me because everytime someone opens their mouth at school its as if they all know it. Think of it this way, when I look at the colors in my little booklet it looks like a periodic table of elements. But the numbers and color shades are all over the place. However, I'm going to figure it out. I'm going to find a way to teach myself if I can't just learn it by looking at it. For example: 33/66 is supposed to be a purple color. But if I mix 33/ and /66 will I also get purple? I need to know this.

I hope it warms up soon. I need to start handing out my cards again. I need to start getting myself in that mind set again. I've handed a few out to some waitresses lately but not the amount I was doing. I need to bring people in to the school period. I have things I need to finish and I'd prefer to do them for real. I'm trying to stay focused on that positively. Its starting to feel like I'm running out of time. I'm still amazed by what has actually happened though. I guess the way I'm looking at it is I've got three passenger cars on my positive train and they are marked March, April, and May and I need to see if I can get some people to ride.

Day 145 & 146 ~ Months, Weeks, Days, & Hours ~ 2/28/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 145 & 146 ~ Months, Weeks, Days, & Hours ~ 2/28/14

Thursday Classroom: Business Building Quiz - 95 %., 1 wrong. The one I had a 50 / 50 guess at.
We did theory for the whole day. Although most of it was stories about financial issues or previous salons etc etc. Next week we start Hair Coloring 1 with Mrs E as our teacher. Then two weeks later we have her for Hair Cutting 1.

Friday Performance Floor: I started the day without a guest so I decided to practise my figure 8 curls. When I came back from break I had a guest for a thermal. She wanted sideways curls so I didn't have to ask how to get that done. Mrs Katelynn the teacher from Part Time was in to help out since I think Mrs L was on vacation. So she helped me with the consultation and sign off. I do like her. She'd be a fun teacher to have. I took my lunch and then Mrs D was there for her roller set. I'm on either desk or dispense this coming week and the other one the week of the 24th so I offered another student the chance to take care of Mrs D those weeks. While I was entering in Mrs D's appointments for March I noticed that the time Regency blocks off for a shampoo set is 1 hour & 45 minutes or in this case 1:30 - 3:15. This makes two weeks in a row that I met that time. It might have gone over but only because of the checking out time. Until she pays the clock is still running on the computer. But as far as when I was finished at my station with her I was done on time. Eh whatever. It makes me feel good but its still not what I'm striving for. All it really means is less time with her. Time which is running out. There's only 14 weeks left unless I'm behind in MPAs when June comes. 484 hours divided by 7 hours is 69.4 days. Divide that by 5 days per week and its 13.88. Or 70 divided by 5 is 14. Take away 2 fridays from this month and possibly the one from the last week and that leaves 10 or 11 more Mrs D visits. That sounds like a lot but they're gonna run out. Plus I need to let some others have a chance with her before I leave so they can take over. Not that I really need to show anyone. Its really not as difficult as it sounds. Not with Mrs D anyway.

There's a lot of counting down that's going on with this. But I'm trying not to get too focused on that. Its going to be hard. I want to do things and celebrate and get excited. But the reality is I need to stay focused on what's going to be happening after that. There's Graduation, the State Board tests, and then what? My future is up to me. make no mistake about that. But I need to start thinking about exactly where I'm trying to go. I need to find a salon that I fit in at. After this long and this much thinking that I've been doing I hope I know what I want and will see it when I find it. I need to be willing to walk away without hesitation from any place that's not the right one. I don't have years or months to find out. I need to possibly cut back on the vendor shows and such and try to start getting into the salons now. Its time to stop all the wondering if I'm good enough or worthy. Its gonna have to be the other way around. Who wants this positive person who just wants to take care of his guests the right way and not complain about things? I know who I am. I'm humbly grateful to have the chance to be him. And I'm gonna. I know there's a place out there with other people like that. I plan to find it. In the meantime the positive train is still moving forward........
