Day 127 ~ Orange You Glad I didn't Use More Yellow? ~ 1/31/14

Performance Floor Friday:
The student council decided to have a "Don't be a Dum Dum" promotion. If you get perfect attendance for a week you get a Dum Dum sucker. Mine was butterscotch today. I picked it without looking. Also added 2 butterflies to the collection.

I didn't have a morning guest right away and there was no assignment posted, I assume because of the days off and because its Friday they wouldn't bother with it. In any case I need hairstyling credits. I spent the first bit of time trying to wash off my capes. I've got four of them that smell like perm solution. Good thing I had a brand new purple one to open just in case I had 2 guests. After that I started a roller set using yellow rollers. Because I didn't have a guest my break was at 10:30 and my lunch at 11:30. during lunch Mrs J told me that Mrs D was coming earlier to also get color. So I didn't get to finish the roller set. I got to just past the ears. As usual I was doing my own design.

Mrs D arrived and thats when she said that she usually doesn't come to us for color. She said she'd had it done at the nursing home a few times when she was there. And thats why when Mrs J came over there was only one technical history note for color from a while back. So I felt kinda priveledged to have gotten the chance. She told Mrs J that she wanted a bit more yellow to the color. Her hair was about half new growth and half older color. So as per Mrs V's instructions I applied to the new growth first and then waited 15-20 minutes then pulled it through with the brush and the rest of the leftover tint and then waited again. It came out well. Mrs D asked Mrs J if since she had the perm it would work if she tried the orange or yellow rollers. So I did the front with orange and the rest with yellow. I find this funny because I purposely tried to use a color of roller on the manikin that wasn't the blue ones. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go over to it and remove them if I ran out. But I didn't have to. And the results came out satisfactory for her. However things should be interesting next week since she wants a haircut. It will be time for me to make up for the botch job I did the first time. I'll have come full circle. Today also marked something important. She has now come to me for roller sets, a perm, a cut, and now color. I don't foresee a relaxer anytime soon though. Its rotation time again next week. That means Mrs C or Mrs E or Mrs L will be on the floor when I do that cut. Should be interesting. I have Mrs J in class. That should be super sparkly. The test that had me obsessed is almost upon me. Perms.

Day 126 ~ The Phone Didin't Ring ~ 1/30/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 126 ~ The Phone Didin't Ring ~ 1/30/14

876 Hours

After three straight days of my phone ringing around 6 am for corporate to tell me the school was closed due to the cold it did not ring this morning.

Thursday Classroom Day: Skin & Electricity Quiz
Taken - 100%

After that it was work on MPA / practicals time. So knowing that I need hairstyling credits I decided to go for thermal styling. On the first manikin I used my flat iron to straighten out the hair that had waves to it.
On the second manikin I did spirals with my Marcel curling iron. Not much else to report.

Day 125 ~ May Be June ~ 1/25/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 125 ~ May Be June ~ 1/25/14

869 Hours
56 Guests

Day 125 is on 1/25 thanks to the school closing yesterday

So doing the math for 631 hours left puts me at 18 weeks and 1 hour left. So right now with the max of 35 hrs per week that puts me at the first week of June at the earliest to graduate. The last week of May would have been possible without my sick day and the snow days. Which is not really news. I knew it was still going to be June. And its only going to be that early if I have my practicals done then. After that its overtime. But I'm no longer scared of that. I want to get them done whenever it happens. The sooner the better but as long as I get the practise I need I don't mind. Because I now know that June date is coming. Its 4 months. The cold weather is still around but the sun is back out again when I'm arriving and leaving school. Its starting to feel like those first days again when I got in the car and strolled my car down that alley to turn onto the main road. Somedays I even have the pleasure of the company of my best friend on that stroll. It seems like such a short time. I'm riding quite a train here and more cars are being added. I still have my doubts as to whether my speed will ever be good enough for a salon to hire me. I mean would any of them want a stylist who can only do 3 clients tops per day? But I am doing everything I can to set myself up to not have to worry about that. I've said it before, I'm not working someplace that's not the right place for me anyway. There's no sense burning bridges I shouldn't even be trying to cross. I do what I do for the people in the chair in front of me. I can't let anything take my mind off of that. I love what I have the pleasure of doing. The honor of doing. People have let me care for them. Its what I wanted to try. Ok I'm doing some talking here. Been listening to some music. I try not to talk so much about the same thing over and over. But this is the place for it. This journal has served its purpose very well. Combined with FB. So anyway lets get on to the stuff you may have come to read instead of that.

Performance Floor Saturday:
My coworker who came for purple hair and spiral iron curls returned today to bring her mother. Her mother was coming for a haircut. She hadn't had one in a few years and was going for quite a change. This was the first time I had hair in a ponytail to start a cut by snipping it off. But I was still only bringing her up to about shoulder to neck length. Not short short.
The cut we were going for was that of a local news reporter named Monica Gayle
http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/18427200/monica-gayle
I'm happy to say that I got pretty close to that and the main thing is she wants to return for trims and such "no matter where I am".
As I was getting close to finishing up with her I was told I had a perm coming up next. So I got lunch done and then met a new guest to Regency. And older lady who had already had a perm somewhere else. She received a basic perm wrap using alternating grey and slightly smaller pink rods. Whats funny about this is months ago I practised a perm on the floor using the pink rods and Mrs V said something about being impressed that I was using them and that we probably wouldn't have anyone getting a pink rod perm. I will say this. I am glad I got to do the perm. The lady did ask me a few times as I got started if I was good with perms or if I'd done them. Something to that effect. She was nice about it. But I'm glad no one else had to worry about it if she would have been a bit fidgety with them. Mrs L did the first 3 or 4 rods on top and then I took over. As I was wrapping I had her turned so that her right shoulder was pointed at the mirror. The lady was turning her head to see what I was doing so I had to be a bit tough with her and said as nicely as I could "I need you to look straight for me so I can do this right for you" I don't think she tried it after that. I also nudged the chair a bit more away from the mirror after that. I did the full middle row and the whole left side and then Mrs E came over to wrap the other side so we could get some time for the haircut later. I'm happy to say that I got through the rinsing without soaking her and because I now put the garbage can behing the chair with a new bag I don't have to worry about the lake on the floor. But since her cape didn't get soaked I didn't get any in the can either. Its not to say it won't happen next time. But for this one it was dry. Mrs E even mentioned it when she was redraping her as I was cleaning up the sink. For the cut it was a slight trim in back at the bottom and then a 90 degree round layer. I did the whole thing. I did this on newly permed tight curls so talk about not being able to see a guide with the ends going different directions. So I winged the thing. I just went to work without sections and snipped little bits off so that I was making straight lines at least and not taking large amounts off. It probably took me 10 minutes. Mrs V was available to check it and said it was good. She didn't want a roller set so it was a bit of mousse and she was ready to go. She didn't want to dry it either. But I got the job done. She was happy. I gave her my card in case I'm still around when she comes back for something. She may need a color soon. I know perms smell but I just don't mind it. I don't like my capes smelling like it as far as the guests having to smell it so I'm glad I got the extra purple ones now. I just keep using the black ones for the perms. Its to the point now where I can almost recite the inside box directions. Basically its set one timer for 20 minutes while the solution is on. I set the other for 7-10 depending on which teacher tells me which time. Then I do the test curl with them watching. Then its rinse for 5 minutes. Towel blot. Apply the neutralizer but save about an ounce. Wait 5 minutes. Take rods out. Put the rest of the neutralizer in. Then rinse for 3-5 more minutes. Blot again. Then whatever happens after that depends on whether its leave, get a cut, rollers, etc. That's the box directions. I'm sure somewhere out there someone does something else. Like it or not perm solution is still being manufactured. The rods still exist. And people both young and old are getting them. I've had a variety of ages already. And some of those perms have been very important to how things are going.
I did not go back to school to dislike things. I just can't be that way. It only leads to me being more miserable than if I learn to do it and surprise myself by not only enjoying it but having someone be happy with me helping them. To be honest the smell of the wax bugs me more than the perm. Anyway I had a good day :)

Day 124 ~ Egg On My Face ~ 1/23/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 124 ~ Egg On My Face ~ 1/23/14

862 Hours

Thursday Classroom:
Day two of Skin & Electricity. For the morning we did some theory on skin. Tuesday the theory was on electricity. Then after morning break we started setting up the room to give facials. This involves lowering all of the tables so we can use them as beds. Then we use our own sheets and such from home since we don't want to use up the stuff for the guests. Then we have to get the crock pots and such set up to warm the towels. After lunch we got started. I received a facial first. We were doing a combo of using our BioElements brand products for the procedure but for the mask we were doing recipes. For mine it was a mix of honey and egg so I had egg on my face. Then when it was my turn to give there were less people in the class wanting to receive so Mrs C went to the floor to get some volunteers from Group B. So I did mine on one of my classmates from Workshop. It was at least someone I knew so that was nice.

I do like giving facials. I don't think I could do multiple of them per day because of the time. Unless I had more music choices LOL. But I wouldn't mind trying. Enya is nice but the CD repeats at least once just for one facial. I would need some variety in there. I personally would have a selection for the guest to choose from anyway. Its their facial. If I had a whole day of them and everyone chose Enya that would be fine with me. At least I would know they would enjoy the music. It is about what they want and their time to relax.

I was supposed to be at school right now but the weather / temperature cancelled it. So Day 125 will be tomorrow or Monday. I hope tomorrow is a go because I have a request scheduled. Plus chances are Mrs D will want to come since today was cancelled.

Day 123 ~ Its So Easy ~ 1/22/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 123 ~ Its So Easy ~ 1/22/14

855 Hours
54 Guests

Almost had Day 123 on 1/23
If you listen to oldies music then you probably know what my title meant. If you're too young to remember it then I think I have your candy ;)

Performance Floor Wednesday:
I started the day with no one scheduled. At roll call Mrs V said our assignment for the day was first a virgin color application using cholesterol and then we were to shampoo that and roller set it. I got set up and cleaned a few items and I went to the desk to check if I had a guest listed yet but I didn't see one. However a lady had just walked in saying she wanted a color. I didn't say anything this time but I was hoping I would be given the honors. I went back to fill my tint bowl with cholesterol and as I put my full bowl down at my station the ticket came. The lady wanted a color and a cut. So instead of pretend color on the manikin I was getting the real thing and unlike the past I was happy about it. She needed a retouch and just a trim of her slightly below shoulder length. We had a good time and had nice conversation. She left happy.

Then I took lunch, came back and cleaned up, took break, and then I had enough time to at least do the virgin color on the manikin. So I got my two credits that I needed for hair color for my 50% milestone. Now I just have about 15 hairstylings to go.

Tomorrow in the class we are doing facials but we're going to be using things other than the products. Mrs C mentioned egg whites and things like that. So that should be a fun day.

Day 122 ~ Electricity Is The Current Subject ~ 1/21/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 122 ~ Electricity Is The Current Subject ~ 1/21/14

848 Hours

I looked up my attendance numbers. I'm exactly 10 hours from where I should be if I were 100% attendance. It says I'm about 98.8 %

Classroom Day: Skin & Electricity Day 1.
We pretty much did theory the whole day. Not much to report. Some was Mrs C going through it with us and some was working on our own. We did a little partnered up walk through of the school looking for electricity related things like surge protectors or the stuff in the circuit breaker room. We did some of the laws and rules stuff. We blew up balloons, rubbed our hair with them, and then tried to use the balloon to pick a few things up like a foil, wax paper, yarn. At the end of the day we played pictionary.

In other news I am now an Avon Representative.
This is my Avon page link although right now you can't order from my site, just browse the catalog or brochure. I have to get a sent in order done first and then they'll activate the site for ordering.

Day 121 ~ Knocked My Socks Off ~ 1/17/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 121 ~ Knocked My Socks Off ~ 1/17/14

841 Hours
53 Guests

Performance Floor Friday:
After the celebrations I started with a 9:30 Shampoo & Thermal. Except she came with her hair wet from already shampooing it. Then while doing the product consult Mrs V asked if she already had a product in it and she said she did so All I had to do was blow dry her and then get to work. She wanted straight but with some curl. So I was going along trying to do that with my flat iron. Got about halfway up the head and she said she needed to leave in a half hour to pick someone up. So I said ok I'll get you done. So I went for it. I started using a bit thicker sections. I was able to get away with it a bit because her hair wasn't quite as tightly curly and the curls seemed to be holding. So I got her done and she really liked the volume I gave her on top. She left really happy.

I took a walk and got lunch. It was decent enough out.
When I got back my color and thermal guest from the day my Mom was in was there with another student and she had brought me the tip she meant to give me.
I still had at least an hour to go before 1:30 so I decided to try getting the roller set assignment done. I figured I could get it done and get it under the dryer and then comb it out after I was done with Mrs D.
I used the large red rollers on Reese and I sliced out my sections. I did them almost the basic way except I purposely did it a little askew. I got it done and under the dryer with plenty of time left before Mrs D came. She came and I did her set. I have to say I think I finally figured out how to do her braicklay in the back better as far as where to start the row. The perm did help a lot too. I was able to roll using just water today and no gel. Just the whipped cream mousse.

At the end of the day after I combed out my roller set on Reese, Mrs L called us all to the middle and was asking if anyone had any add on services or sold retail or anything special. I hadn't done any of that today. But when she got around to asking me I said I gave my guest curls she hadn't had before and then she said I also got my thermal done really fast so I got to pick a prize from the box. I chose these socks. They did say adult on them. ;)

Day 120 ~ Myology or Yourology? ~ 1/16/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 120 ~ Myology or Yourology? ~ 1/16/14

834 Hours

Classroom Day:
Last day of Anatomy and Nails part 1.
Quiz day: I was Anatomically Correct for 100%
Myology is the study of the muscular system. Now you won't have to injure your carpals trying to look it up.

After the quiz Mrs C had us playing around with nail art. It was like a free for all craft project. Basically she wanted us to glue some nail tips onto something and put some sort of design on them using something. I was trying to make some sort of color wheel out of them but I couldn't find something to glue them to. So I went with my original idea and glued enough of them together to make a full ring of tips. Or in this case a bracelet. Then I used my bottle of Finger Paints - Vintage Violet polish that I had brought with me to paint the whole thing.

After lunch we had the option of doing manicures and pedicures or working on our acrylic tip MPAs. While I would have loved to give or get either one I opted for getting the rest of my 50 acrylic tips done now so that when nails comes around again I won't be in some rush to get the last 23 I needed. Nor will it hold me back from reaching my 75% milestone when that time comes if that's before nails comes around again. So I glued 23 tips onto one corn meal glove and knocked them out. Then with the time left I did a little bit of nail art on two tips. I made a purple flower on one and then on the other I started by trying to make a pink heart but it came out globby so it turned into a dot. So I made another. Then I made some little squiggly lines. I have no idea what its supposed to be but its my design.

That's all for now. Next week we start skin and electricity. Facials are coming.

Day 118 & 119 ~ Nice Cup Of Tea ~ 1/15/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 118 & 119 ~ Nice Cup Of Tea ~ 1/15/14

827 Hours
51 Guests

Tuesday Classroom Day:
We did theory on Anatomy for the morning and then in the afternoon I finally got to try using acrylic monomers and polymers to form a surface on top of a glued on artificial tip. Glued onto what? Well that's a silly question, of course it was glued onto a rubber glove filled with corn meal. You can't just go around gluing these things to something like a small plate of hardened keratin. So here's the good news. For my manicuring credits I need to do at least 50 tips to graduate. I also needed to have at least 20 tips to get my 750 hour 50% milestone. I did 27 tips so I met that minimum. So now its a matter of waiting to see if I get some more tomorrow or the next time we have nails. By no means am I ready to be doing acrylic nails on anyone at this point. This was just the bare minimum of application. I didn't get to budd the acrylic because we didn't have the product to make it dry nor the fancy lights. But I got that personal milestone out of the way. I dipped a brush into the liquid then into the powder and then painted it onto a tip for the first time.
If you're on my journal page here's the picture of the 3 gloves with 27 tips

Wednesday Performance Floor:
I had a shampoo & thermal guest today. Instead of washing and straightening she wanted a bit of curl and basically said to do whatever I wanted. I started out making S shaped curls with my flat iron but after I got up to above the ears I decided that my marcel iron would do a nicer job so I switched. I asked if she wanted a drink and she said tea. We were out of the regular tea bags but Mrs Sherri found a larger bag for making ice tea. So my guest and I had some fun with getting it just right. It took me a while to do the curls. But I had some really nice communication with my guest. She understood me and she didn't mind that I wanted to be careful and take care of her and let her relax. And I got to do the whole head myself and she was happy. I was the first one to use a curling iron on her. I told her we would start a trend.  We had fun. She wasn't figety or hurried. She really did just relax. So I got to learn. I got to teach myself. So she left with her crown of curls. She let me care.

Day 117 ~ 50 Guests ~ 1/13/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 117 ~ 50 Guests ~ 1/13/14

813 Hours
50 Guests

Monday Performance Floor:
When the day started at Roll Call Mrs J was doing the announcments and such. She said the assignment for those without a guest would be a roller set which I was happy about. But after I got set up I went to the desk to check if I had a guest coming and it turns out I had a guest coming in for a perm at 10:30. This means that I had a guest for a perm 2 straight days not counting Sunday. This time it was a lady with about bob length hair that was new to Regency. She just wanted a bit of wave / body so Mrs J had me do a basic wrap using a combo of the larger orange rods and the in between orchid / purple rods. I had a very nice time with my guest. She wasn't in a hurry at all and I think I won her over pretty well. It turns out the last time she got a perm she had gone to a school called Platinum which just so happens to be what replaced the Virginia Farrell location I used to go to. She said she wants to get a cut soon but she's going out of town for a few weeks so there's a chance I'll see her again when she gets back. And that's pretty much the story for the day.

Day 116 ~ 800 Numbers ~ 1/11/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 116 ~ 800 Numbers ~ 1/11/14

806 Hours
49 Guests

So for the second time I can say I have 800 of 1500 hours of Cosmetology School at a certain school. Now its 2 different ones. Only this time I should pass 900 and on. :)

Performance Floor Saturday:
My guest for this morning was a haircut with eyebrow wax / tweeze.
She was a young lady with below shoulder longer hair with some longer layers and a side bang. And all we were doing was tidying that up a bit. She was a very good guest to have and was letting me pretty much do what I wanted. Everytime I did something and asked about it she said perfect. Then she was the same way with the eyebrows. But Mrs E did most of the waxing. I did a little bit at the end and a little tweezing. No biggie though. I still learned.

Then I took my lunch and as I was going Mrs J said that Mrs D was coming for a perm and not just her usual roller set. So I had no choice but to accept the challenge. As it turns out it was a bit more than I was expecting. Instead of a basic wrap which I could have busted through in plenty of time even if not rubric speed it turned out that we were going to do a bricklay and alternate white and grey rods. Which is ok but it get hard to do the side rods with holding the hair on that angle. I did a few rows and realized that I was not going fast enough to get it done in time so I called Mrs E over and said I would probably need some help after all. So she rolled some and then Mrs J rolled some. I rolled some more. Then I processed and rinsed and it turned out that Mrs D was also still getting her roller set. So Mrs J and I doubled teamed that. But I did end up staying a few minutes afterward. Which I don't mind especially since its Mrs D. So I said I accepted the challenge and I did. I just can't say that I did it all and got it done myself. But it got done and it came out nice. So I have no complaints. The results matter.

Day 114 & 115 ~ Happy New Year ~ 1/10/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 114 & 115 ~ Happy New Year ~ 1/10/14

799 Hours

Its been a while. We were supposed to be off for just New Years Day but the below freezing temps had many Regency schools closed for days. On Janurary 2, the thursday to go back I showed up and the parking lot was empty and the building locked. I then realized that the number that called me from MN was Regency calling. Friday there was school but I ended my 113 day in a row streak by needing to call in sick. I was supposed to work the desk that day and I would not have been much good trying to answer the phones. It gave me a chance to take some meds that were ok for being drowsy.
I didn't have the Saturday or Monday this week so I was off for those. Then School was closed for Tuesday and Wednesday. So I was gone for 7 days straight.

Thursday Classroom Day: We're supposed to have Mrs C now for starting the Antaomy & Nails 1 portion but she was on a vacation day with the schedule being messed with again so we had Mrs J for class. We basically did theory on anatomy and then the second half of the day some that knew how did some acrylics while I was just practising gluing the nails onto a cornmeal filled glove. And then another. Then I applied some polish to practise that. I have people asking me if I know how to apply acrylics and I wish I could say yes but I just have this feeling like its going to take forever to learn it. I'm gonna have to pretty much teach myself because we've already lost a day in class by not being there Tuesday and the fact that anatomy is mixed in makes it harder to fit in the nail stuff. Anyway that was yesterday.

Today Friday Floor Day: There were barely any guests for anyone today and the first one for anyone was at 10. After the dancing and such Mrs L gave us a fun assignment. We had to partner up and then each partner could only use one arm to wrap a perm together. So me and my partner, A went to work on it. Got it done. Not exactly a perm that you would want to put solution on. But it was a full head. We got to pick a prize from the treasure box. There was a purple bow in there that is similar to pink one that Mrs Sherri gave me a few weeks ago and of course I chose that.  It was assumed I would by a few people.

I did not mention that in class on the 31st after the makeup stuff I worked on a roller set using yellow rollers. I did it on my Barbara manikin with the thicker amount of hair.
Today I took the rollers out while I was waiting on the chance that Mrs D was coming for her 1:30 set.
Then I brushed it serveral different ways to see what I could do with it. Turns out quite a lot. But here are the removed roller pics and one combout I got a pic of. I skipped the backcombing since I wasn't done trying things. Someday I might get over it and do some.

That's all for today. Mrs D did call and reschedule for tomorrow and I have a guest coming first thing for a haircut and some other things. Her history shows that she's a regular for cuts. Although she did have an updo her first time so who knows how long she keeps her hair. But that's tomorrow.

Thank you for reading. I appreciate it.

Day 112 & 113 ~ Happy New Year ~ 12/31/13

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 112 & 113 ~  Happy New Year  ~ 12/31/13

785 Hours
47 Guests

Monday:
I'm working the desk this week so it was a nice day of learning the ropes again for answering the phones, entering appointments, checking out the guests. I do like it even though calls come in that are harder to handle than others at times. But I'm learning.

Tuesday:
It was once again an off the curriculum day due to the holidays. This time we were doing actual Salon Fair type fun. But there were only 6 of us. But I had my shaving cream and razor with me because I was going to use it last thursday when I went to visit my Mary Kay friend and let her do my makeup for a portfolio contest she was doing. So I let student M trim my facial hair off with the trimmers so she could get a credit for a beard trim and then I shaved myself in the bathroom since we can't shave people, only barbers can.

So here are the two makeup looks that student M did on me for it.

When I walked the Catwalk / middle of the salon floor I had my purple cape on backwards and I acted out the first part of this song / video from Frozen. However it is a bit of a spoiler so only watch it if you don't mind seeing it or already saw it.
Let It Go from Frozen

Tomorrow is another classroom day so who knows what will be happening? But I'll be there.
