Day 144 ~ 1000 Hours ~ 2/26/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 144 ~ 1000 Hours ~ 2/26/14

1002 Hours
67 Guests

Did I really type that? I guess I have over 10 hundred hours. That leaves 498 hours. Just over 14 weeks left. Counting the weeks on the calendar puts me at about June 8th. I think Memorial Day is the only weekday holiday left in that time. But if I counted right I'm supposed to be off that Monday anyway so I wouldn't miss a day. So that's the week if I'm not behind in my work.

Wednesday Performance Floor:
I didn't have a guest today. I spent the day working on and finishing up my Mardi Gras project.
Today I had my extension beading tool with me and that made all the difference. First I took the dogs off the style. Then I put the left sideburn that was braided with the beaded necklaces onto the front hairline and used the tool to pull 4 strands of hair from the bangs through it to hold it in place. This left those hairs hanging behind it going towards the crown. I then took some heart shaped beads and fed them onto those strands but I was putting them so that the bottoms of the hearts for each color touched each other for a butterfly shape. But I ran out of the yellow hearts before I could finish so I then made just two strands out of the four strands. Then rather than leaving them hanging towards the back I brought them together with a bead and pointed the tip of the combined strand back towards the face and fed that back through the necklace and then back again toward the back. This formed the butterfly strands into a heart like shape. Then I needed to do something with the two pipe cleaners from the bag Mrs C gave us. I took a purple pipe cleaner of my own and twisted it with the green and yellow one and formed a loop with it. I then twisted the leftover strand from the butterfly beads into it to hold the loop and now it formed a club or shamrock shape. I then took my feathers and poked them into the beads on top. The other day a classmate suggested I do a waterfall braid. I've never tried one. But I decided to take the right side sideburn that I had braided with the string and use that as part of a waterfall braid going from right to back to left.. And it came out decent for me anyway. Then I had 2 each of the three colors of bobby pins with spiral curled strings hanging from them that I bought at Claire's months back. I poked them through along the top side of the waterfall spaced out around it. Then because the crown area was a bit messy looking and kinda wide open I decided to go ahead and put some of my clip in flowers to finish it off. I saw styles that had flowers on them when I Googled Mardi Gras hair. I was going to try some makeup or a face paint but I couldn't get anything to work for the lips. I tried lipstick, eye liner, marker, acrylic paint. Either it didn't do anything or didn't show as purple like I wanted or the paint was too watery. So I just wiped it off. I kinda like her better without a mask. And then it was time to give her to Mrs C to put in lockup to keep her safe for the Saturday vote.

Day 143 ~ Mock Three Times On The Ceiling If You Want Me ~ 2/25/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 143 ~ Mock Three Times On The Ceiling If You Want Me ~ 2/25/14

995 Hours

Saturday: When I arrived at school on Saturday I was expecting to do a thermal and then have my friend come for cut & color but as I entered the building Mrs C told me to clock in but we may be closing. Apparently some plumbing issue was keeping the water from going down. We did close after only an hour. My friend and I did some other things instead. I'm not sure if that hour counted towards my total or not so until I check the computer and find out otherwise I'm not counting it.

Monday: Mrs C likes the show Project Runway and decided that our assignment for the week would be Salon Project Runway - Mardi Gras Avant Garde. We can do anything we want on a manikin with a Mardi Gras theme but she also gave us a bag with 3 items that have to be used somehow. So I brought mostly my purple, green, and yellow hair toys since those are the colors I was seeing when I Googled Mardi Gras hair. I also brought all my pony beads and string and pipe cleaners that I've had since 1998. I also brought a manikin I bought on eBay named Lexi with longer hair. My 3 items from the bag were a few feathers, 2 pipe cleaners, and a green bead necklace. I had to laugh because I had 20 million pipe cleaners already. I had no idea and really still don't have any idea what I'm doing. I'm having fun with it but I feel like I have no chance at winning the contest anyway. My thinking was that I would only have Monday to actually work on it because I already had most of Wednesday booked and Mrs D on Friday at least. They will be on display this coming saturday for guests to vote on. Anyway I made slow progress and managed to do a few things. I was kicking myself a bit because I realized that I had a tool that would have helped me put my beads on the hair and I left it at home. It was the tool I got by taking the hair extension class. I think I might have done something different with it. Anyway I just now reminded myself to bring it with me. My plans for tomorrow have changed so I might get to work on it more than I thought if I don't get a guest. But for now I have a string braid on one side and on the other I have the green necklace from the bag along with a purple one Mrs C gave me for the heck of it and I braided those into the hair. Then I put the bead braid up across the forehead while I pulled the string braid around back. Then I played around with some dog shaped beads I had. I don't know if I'm using them or not but it kept me from pulling my hair out the other day so I temporarily did something with them. We'll see what happens. Maybe I'll style the hair and maybe I won't. I'm not interested in doing this someone else's way. If I knew I had the time I might challenge myself more but that time issue haunts me all the time. So I'm going to think outside the box and use what I brought. Whatever it is. I brought my boxes and I plan to take things out of them.

Today / Tuesday Classroom: My third Mock State Board.
Knowing what I know now I'd have to say things turned out pretty much how I expected but this morning had me on edge. The other day when Mrs J was reading the info to us she said that we were not required to bag up our items for the Regency mock board. So we didn't. We had the option to if we did it on our own. I ended up not really packing. If I take this again before I graduate I'm packing. Bottom line. If I'm not going to practise it the way its done for real then there's no point. Packing and unpacking these bags is so much of the task with all the sanitizing and setting up that it just makes things more difficult if you're not packed.
Because I was not packed for the manicure and able to set up faster I ended up not finishing. I did not get the top coat on. So that was a point off. I had a band too close to the scalp on the perm. And because I chose to use an uncut and thicker haired manikin for the iron curls the front one fell loose. But I ended up with 118 out of 123 points for 96% which as I read back in this journal find out is my new high score. I had 94 % with Mrs C. I have to say that if this were Mrs E or the real deal I'd not have scored so high. For starters my choice of Barbara for a manikin had me using some very sloppy looking sections. I'm proud as heck of myself for how fast I sectioned my perm but I'd have never wrapped a real perm on them without fixing them. Standing up for the manicure portion was new. I'm thinking I did a better job with the polish standing up. But my hands were shaking trying to bend down like that. All 3 of them.

If you're on the journal page here's the current Mardi Gras progress picture

Day 141 ~ Challenge Accepted ~ 2/21/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 141 ~ Challenge Accepted ~ 2/21/14

981 Hours
67 Guests

Friday Performance Floor:
We began the day with celebrating the graduation of a friend. The student who came up with the purple color for my guest that I later also used on me graduated. She also gave me a ride home when my car was being fixed. She also offered me some encouragement to not stand by myself when I was outside at break and lunch doing my own thing away from the others.

I didn't have a morning guest to start with so I was going to grab a manikin. But before I did Mrs E asked me if I had a guest and then had me help another student with their elderly guest at the shampoo bowl with adjusting the chair and such. After that I saitized a bunch of my items. I was informed by the desk student that I had an 11:00 guest for a thermal. This meant I would have to get it done before Mrs D arrived at 1:30. Which I figured I could as long as it didn't turn out to be a thermal style I wasn't expecting such as something on long hair. She arrived and I went to work. She wanted curls with the flat iron. I had Mrs E help me make sure I was doing the right technique before I got halfway into it the wrong way. Things were going well and we were having a good time Then one of the regular friday guests that I had as a guest the day my Mom was a guest arrived. She knew my guest and so they were talking to each other while I worked. And things were all happy until I was just about done and that other guest started looking at my guest to see what I needed to fix. I forget if she was a stylist a while back or just knows how to do hair or what it is but she's the one who called me a profectionist so I guess she's expecting me to be perfect already. She's not being nasty about it but anyway I kept my cool. All I kept doing was just going and getting Mrs E to come keep me on track. So as I was fixing the last few odd ends that were being pointed out Mrs D arrived. This had me thinking I was running over with my guest so when the guest herself started picking about a few of the same ends over and over I had Mrs E step in some more. Because I'm not letting my positive go away. I have the help to use right now and I'm going to use it. She paid and left and I told Mrs D I'd be a minute while I cleaned up. That's when I checked the time and it was just then turning 1:30 so Mrs D had just arrived a bit early.

I shampooed her and then while she was back at the station and I was coming to get the Sebastian - Whipped Creme mousse Mrs E was telling me that I'm getting faster. I was telling her about how Mrs C says step on the gas but I need to steer the car first. Well I'm starting to steer now. She says something about "Lets see how fast you can get her up under the dryer." Its usually after 3 when I get her under it. Today my watch said 2:30. The yellow rollers make it a bit faster but at the same time I roller her hair using just the mousse today with only a few squirts of water at the nape to finish. Even with cutting her hair shorter than it was after the perm its still easier to handle. I've got my technique down with using the roller to grab the hair. Its kinda funny considering its a smooth plastic surface to say grab. But that's the best way to say it. Its kinda like I take the roller and punch the hair in the gut with it and then work upward to then start rolling down. The hair just bends over it on its own now. While I was on lunch while she was drying I posted "This is really starting to be fun. Comb twirlin, feet movin. I love this - feeling accomplished"

Tomorrow looks to be fun as well......

Day 138. 139, 140 ~ Buisiness Building ~ 2/20/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 138. 139, 140 ~ Buisiness Building ~ 2/20/14

974 Hours
65 Guests

Tuesday Classroom: We started Business Building 1 this week. I had BB2 when I started Rehearsal. That one was about the salon and owning one. This portion is more about building yourself as a stylist. We talked mostly about goal setting and then we split into small groups to do a goal plan for whatever dreamboard we came up with. We looked through magazines or drew etc and we just had to plan out the measurments and such of the goal. My partner and I did expanding our salon within a year. Basically the business next to our salon is now empty and we can expand into it. So we planned that out. There was a magazine picture of what was probably a florist called Blossom's so we used that for the exterior.
In the afternoon Mrs J. started to go over Mock State Board prep. I take it again on Tuesday, my third time.
This is where we practise doing the real State Board test that we would have to do for getting our license after we graduate. Just the hands on portion.

Wednesday Performance Floor: Our assignment was any haircut we wanted to do on a manikin. I had a requested guest coming in at 11 so I busted out a 90% round layers on a manikin I got from eBay. It was a Debra manikin but it has pink hair dye splattered into about a third of it. This is one that a classmate had borrowed and had trouble combing through it. And I did too when it was wet. But that's why I brought her. I knew from overhearing the day before that we had to do a haircut so I brought some sacrificial manikins.

My guest was a new friend that I just met. She came for a facial and we had a ball with that. I love doing facials. This was nice to be able to talk to my guest too. Right now there's a return visit planned for a pedi. Looking forward to that.

Thursday / Today Classroom: More of Tuesday. We split into groups again and we each picked 3 of our retail products and then had to describe the features and benefits as though we were telling them to a guest. Then we started to talk about credit cards and such but got a bit sidetracked. After lunch we discussed the Mock Board some more and Mrs Sherri and Mrs J both did some demos of some of the tasks.

Day 137 ~ Meet Me Halfway ~ 2/14/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 137 ~ Meet Me Halfway ~ 2/14/14

953 Hours
64 Guests

Performance Floor Friday:
I received my second Star pin for achieving the 50 percent requirements. That also means I got to take my star and move it from the Rehearsal room door and place it on the wall in the hallway where the 50% sign is. I'll get a picture of that if I think of it.

When I checked the appointment schedule at first it was telling me I had a guest at 12:45 on the printouts but when I asked what it was for the student at the desk said the computer said it was for 11:30 and a haircut. Which was better because Mrs D comes at 1:30. So I spent the first part of the morning removing the orange rollers from Deborah's hair and I was purposely practising my back combing. Its been 950 hours and I still don't have the knowledge I need for that. Or maybe I do and it just hasn't come from my hands yet. But I do need to start learning it and getting good at it. My goal now that I'm feeling better about things is to start picking brains. If Mrs C wasn't as busy today I was going to ask her. I asked Mrs E the other day to help me with the spiral iron curls. I've got the other haircoloring and haircutting portions of class coming up. Both will be with Mrs E unless I'm reading the rotation wrong. We've got some guest speakers coming as well for demos. I guess I'm going into learning mode. Now that I don't have to be scared of not being able to do things its time to just relax and learn to do them better.

My 11:30 guest was an older teen with below shoulder length hair. It was colored red. She was there for just a half inch trim or just enough to remove splits. She had an unwanted cut of like 5 inches months ago and then she had come to the school and had it fixed by another student. So I did my song and dance to both her and her mom about how I'm the right person for the job. I did the shampoo and mentioned how I also am trying to be careful when I wash long hair too. I got her back to the chair and gently combed her out and sectioned and then I combed down the back section and was about to cut. But there was at least an inch difference in length between the longest pieces and the shorter ones. So I told her about it and that I was going to let down more hair to check to see if it was just those few hairs that were shorter but as I let down more sections it was clear that the right side had shorter hair than the left and I showed it to her as well. So we agreed that I would take the 1/2 inch off of the longer hairs and then I would just snip the splits off of the shorter ones if I saw them. Then she could come back at a later time after it grows some and I can fix it more. This is what I mean when I say that when a guest is in my chair it is not about making them my billboard. I don't care if she walks out with her hair uneven like that if I know it wasn't me that did it to her. My mission is to earn trust. I told her that. I told her that I would dry it a bit and then snip the splits off if I saw some. And I did. I held up small sections and snipped a few hairs that I could see splits on. The bottom line is that it was what we agreed upon together. I asked her which approach she wanted to take and she went with mine instead of going for the even up. Either way I gave her options and went with it. I gave her my card. I let her know that it might take awhile before there's anything worth trimming but she also may need to come back for a color retouch before June so perhaps both would be ready for the same time. So we'll just have to wait and see if I get to see her again before I finish.

Mrs D came for her roller set and we had a good time. Then because she had parked further down and in a regular spot I walked her to the car to make sure she could get in and put her rolling walker in.

I did not make Designer status for my 50%. But that's ok. I am so much better off since I stopped letting that be my goal. I'm still almost there anyway. I just haven't sold the retail. I point out what I used. Its up to them to choose if they want it. When I think about all those trims I went and got in all those different salons only one ever mentioned a product to me. The first one when I tried to give a bigger tip. She suggested I buy a product and I did. None of the others told me what they used to shampoo me or pointed out anything on a shelf or anything. So I figure if I at least point out my products used I'll be doing more than some. And maybe that will evolve. I am selling Avon so my sales abilities may improve or evolve. But its not a focus. I'd rather know someone by name because they came back.

Day 136 ~ The Day Came ~ 2/13/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 136 ~ The Day Came ~ 2/13/14

946 Hours
62 Guests

Classroom Day:
Perms - Quiz and Rubric Day.
Quiz - 100%
Rubric - Passed.

At the beginning of September when I looked at my Rehearsal book at the time requirement for the perm rubric it said 45 minutes. At the time my basic perm wrap took me an hour and a half. So I became a perming machine and since then I have done about 20 basic perm wraps on my Deborah manikin. All of that was in preparation for today. The day I was going to kick that timer's butt. It sure is funny how things work out though. I am glad that I did a recent timing with the white rods to let me know that I can beat that 45 minutes. But today the rubric came and instead of being a test it was just a pleasant day of meeting someone in person for the first time. It was having the priveledge of her trusting me to chemically change her hair. It was not a basic wrap.. Instead of doing the basic wrap that I did 20 times, I did a spiral perm and this would be about my 4th try. This time with the chemicals. And I got results and she's happy. I focused so much on speed before and all that practise helps for sure. But there's the bigger test I was trying to pass and that was getting a model. When I met my guest last month online it wasn't with any intent on having them be a model. But they went from an unknown person to friend today. Its funny because Mrs J was asking if I knew anything about her hair and I knew a little bit but this was going to be just as random as a walk in. The only difference being that I had already discussed rod sizes a bit. As it turns out we used the orchid / purple rods I already had. The same ones I went and bought to finish the first spiral I did with Mrs J's workshop class in August / September. So anyway that was the end of the perming chapter. Up next is Business Building 1 and another Mock State Board test. My third one. This time with Mrs J. Should be fun.

Day 134 & 135 ~ Curly For Shirley ~ 2/12/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 134 & 135 ~ Curly For Shirley ~ 2/12/14

939 Hours
61 Guests

Tuesday Classroom Day:
Half of the class had their perm rubrics yesterday and we have to do them on a live model whether its water only wrapping or doing a real perm. My model is supposed to come on Thursday so I instead volunteered to let whomever needed a model do something on me with just the water. My offer was accepted. First though we had to pick a type of perm out of a bowl randomly to do on a manikin. My luck of the draw got me a basic wrap. So I knocked one out. Then a student did a spiral wrap on me. Because she went to the trouble of wrapping my long hair I wasn't going to let it go to waste so i sat under the dryer for as long as I had time for. Most of my hair dried.

Wednesday Performance Floor:
My coworker had to reschedule his cut & color from Monday until today but he was able to come today. So I got to do his cut for the third time and his color for the second. With the remaining time I practised some spiral Marcel iron curls.

I slept in my curls over night and wore them pulled back in a tail with one of my purple pom pom type bands. One reason I kept the curls  was to stay curly for Shirley Temple who passed yesterday.

Day 133 ~ Its Not Friday Yet ~ 2/10/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 133 ~ Its Not Friday Yet ~ 2/10/14

925 Hours
60 Guests, 0 Today

Performance Floor Monday:
Today's assignment was Marcel curls, On Base. Mrs E said to try it on the shorter hair manikins if we had them so I gave it a try on Deborah. I got the full head of curls done and did a combout. While on break I looked up my stats and it said I needed one more hairstyling to get my 50% Milestone. When I finished the style Mrs E was on break and Mrs Sherri was out on the floor. I asked her if she wanted the honors of putting in my credit.
After lunch I shampooed Deborah and decided to start a roller set since I knew I was going to need more hairstyling credits to reach the next milestone. I decided to try a bircklay pattern starting on the left side going from behind the ear to the forehead, then neck to forehead. Instead of going ear to ear style. Here's how the pattern came out with the rollers still in. I haven't removed the rollers yet. I might be able to tomorrow, especially if I use her to practise perms while others are doing their rubrics. I do mine on Thursday. The reason I said its not Friday yet is that I'm not celebrating my Milestone yet until Friday comes and I find out for sure. Then I'll have to see what I need for the 75%.
Mrs C and I are doing much better these days. Now that I'm getting confident. She has told me several times that I am going to be an exceptional hairdresser etc during these several months and I know that all along she's had nothing but the best intentions with the way she teaches. I know it was my own issues that caused my frustrations with her. I knew that then too. But I know I'm a control freak. But I know I can finish now. I'm not scared of not finishing anymore. Its still 17 weeks away. But its going to be 17 good weeks. I'm going to have fun and get some more learning in.

Day 132 ~ A Good Day ~ 2/8/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 132 ~ A Good Day ~ 2/8/14

918 Hours
60 Guests

Performance Floor Saturday:
I started the day with the knowledge that at 9:30 I had a thermal scheduled that also included a conditioning treatment. My guest was a young lady, possibly a teen. This was the first time she had been to our school. With Mrs E's help we chose a conditioner mixture to use. Here's were the fun comes in. First I had to wait for a shampoo bowl to open so my guest and I were both waiting. Then when one did open up it was the one that was recently "fixed" but the knob doesn't turn the right way so you can't adjust the water. So after playing with that for a few minutes another bowl opened up and I had my guest switch over to it. Then we were out of caps so I had to use one of the bags instead. Then I got her into the dryer chair and when I went to adjust the hight of the hood the arm part slipped out of the  back. Which I am aware of it doing and knew how to put it back. Then as I went to put the hood down the ring that holds the inner hood in place came loose. So I told her to switch chairs so I could get her going and then fix that since I knew how. It has a hook and spring gizmo on it similar to a tool box. Then of course there's the usual dropping clips and dropping my brush. But I was in a good mood. I am feeling it. I was in control. And I did the blow drying and flat ironing with confidence. And when I was about halfway through Mrs E walked by and said "That looks good Rob" and that helped a bunch because then the guest hears that too. When I finished my guest was happy with her straightening. I thanked her for putting up with my clumsiness or something like that. Then the adult she was with was paying and said they would be back in two weeks so I said I'm there that saturday. And I was rebooked. And after a nice tip they left.

Then I had a nice lunch

And then at 1:00 I had the pleasure of having an older guest for a thermal. Only she wanted curls instead of straight. I had a little bit of a slow start. I had my tiny flat iron at first and was giving the nape area some curl. But I wasn't sure if she wanted horizontal curl of more like hanging spiral type. I ask her if they use a flat iron or the marcel usually and she said they used the marcel. So I tried using it on a longer strand and because it wasn't hot enough yet it wasn't making the curls I wanted so I asked Mrs E to help get me on track. Which was basically to take my bigger flat iron and do the same curls I was starting to do with my small flat iron on the shorter nape hairs. So it turns out I was doing it right. I don't know if she'll rebook me because she doesn't have a set period for it but I gave her my card. But I got the job done and I had a good day. Good drive home. And now to start another good week. Already some nice things that may happen.

Day 131 ~ Rod & Roll ~ 2/7/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 131 ~ Rod & Roll ~ 2/7/14

911 Hours
58 Guests

Performance Floor Friday:
Ah a Mystery Flavor, Dum Dum......Its blue, hmm I think its cotton candy. Got another butterfly. Only had 2 days of school last week but I was there for 100% attendance.
Started the day in a good mood. Felt a bit refreshed since hitting that 900 mark and doing these timings the past few days. The temperatures were below zero today but the school was open. I was originally scheduled to be part of doing the kids party that was coming in today but that was because I only had Mrs D scheduled for the fridays in janurary and not February yet. I fixed it last week though.
Because of the cold we did not have a bunch of walk ins waiting this morning. So I took Suzi out of my locker who had the yellow rollers, roller set started from last week. But because Mrs D wants to use the yellow rollers now I decided to restart the roller set using the larger beige rollers. So I went to work on it and I finished it before 11. Mrs C told me I would have 12 oclock lunch since Mrs D was coming at 1. Since there were about 20 kids coming in at the same time for two seperate parties she was trying to manage the time. So because I had an hour I went and got Deborah from the car and my orchid rods. I then set up for a timed wrap. I set the timer for 35 minutes and got started. About halfway through Mrs C came over and told me I had a walk in for a thermal. But I had to remind her that I had Mrs D coming in at 1. Reason being that by law I have to take a lunch. I didn't say that but just telling her that Mrs D was coming in was enough to get that point across. So she gave it to someone else. However the distraction was enough to cause me to finish just after the 35 minute buzzer went. But I finished. Mrs C said that I'm probably faster than her. Or something to that effect. I took my lunch. Then I took the rollers out of Suzi and got ready for Mrs D. I didn't comb out the style though. Mrs C liked how it came out as it was though. I had a nice pattern going though. I guess the way I could describe it is kinda like a herringbone pattern. I had rows going downward towards each side with the part line kinda staggered. I was having fun by this time with Mrs C. The other day when I did the timed perm on the floor I told her my 31 minute time and that made her happy. I think I'm starting to show her some of my gas stepping.
And then Mrs D came. She was coming in at 1 instead of 1:30 to give me time for a haircut too. So this was going to be redemption time or another botch. I got her shampooed and then asked Mrs C if she wanted to start the guide or have me procede. She let go of my leash. One to have me step on the gas. Two because the party kids were about to come flooding in. And I gave Mrs D the round layer cut, my way. Mrs C checked it and didn't cut a thing. Except that she showed me something she does when she finishes by combing just a few of the face area pieces to check for tiny stringy pieces. But it was what it was supposed to be. A nice little teaching tip and nothing to correct. She did not cut any corners off or anything. And I did step on the gas. I don't know how long the cut took me because I wasn't looking at my watch. But she arrived around 1:20 and I still had her under the dryer with rollers in at the usual time. This was with once again rolling her shorter hair. I definitely have figured out how to get the hair on the roller easier. I used to put the roller near the ends first but now I put it a bit further down and with the hair bent over it I pull up or out to get it to curl and smooth onto the roller on its own. Mrs D's perm helps a bunch. I barely have to do anything with her hair. I haven't even been using gel for the past several weeks, even before the perm.

I have a thermal scheduled for first thing tomorrow. So that should give me another hairstyling credit to get me closer to my milestone. Or perhaps something else will happen. Either way its Saturday and I'm putting my purple shirt on and I'm gonna pick up a comb or two or more.

I am feeling it. I am loving it. If I'd have been given that thermal today I'd have done it. I do not go to school to not want to do something. The teachers are there to get me through it and teach me. So I might as well procede. I like the smell of perms. Hairspray doesn't bother me anymore. My hands don't feel as heavy as they used to.

I am a cosmetologist. Always a student of cosmetology. I will always learn something. I will always improve. I will always get unexpected results and learn from them. I'm always going to love this. Humbly love it. As long as someone trusts me to show them that I do.

Day 130 ~ When 900 hours you reach, look as good, you will not ~ 2/6/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 130 ~ When 900 hours you reach, look as good, you will not ~ 2/6/14

904 Hours

Classroom Day:
I have permanently waved goodbye to 800 hours.

For class today we spent the morning session doing a few group activities. One was we used manikin swatches and a few strands that some of us volunteered. I volunteered a swatch for my group. We then used different perm solutions and different sized rods to just test how they come out. So I guess I technically got a perm.

For the second session we did a relay. There were 3 teams. One team wrapped a basic perm, one a bricklay, one a spiral. My group had the bricklay. We took turns wrapping a row. The basic perm won.
After afternoon break it was free time to do whatever. So I set up for a timed wrap. Only today I was going to use white rods instead of the purple / orchid. The last time I did timing with white rods I had gone as low as 45 minutes. Today I got down to 39 minutes. So I beat that 45 minute limit that I was trying for.

Day 129 ~ Tomorrow ~ 2/5/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 129 ~ Tomorrow ~ 2/5/14

897 Hours
57 Guests - 0 Today

I don't know exactly how many hours I had last time. I know it was in the 800's. I stand at 897 with 3 hours to go until that 800 number goes away. So tomorrow will be the next personal milestone. I'll have 900. But more importantly I'll be under 600 left. I look forward to using them well. In the grand scheme of things there are no hours to count. Its 603 hours until I can take my test. But after that its going to be time to put years together. Good years.

Performance Floor Wednesday:
It snowed a lot today but it only got heavy after we were all on our way to school so it was too late for a school closing. But it kept the customer list at bay. We did have a few walk ins today but for the first time in  what seems like forever I did not have a guest. Today's assignment was a spiral perm. If I recall correctly I've only done one so far at Regency. I might have done one years ago but I can't remember for sure. So I worked on it and it took me a long time. But I finished it. And then because I knew my time from yesterday I went ahead and did another basic perm on Deb. Only this time on the floor without the easier table set up. Yesterday I got it done in 29 minutes. Today it was 31. I took a picture since it's been a while since I've shared one.

That's all for today :) Thanks for reading.

Day 128 ~ 3.5 x 9 = 29? ~ 2/4/14

Cosmetology School Journey ~ Day 128 ~ 3.5 x 9 = 29? ~ 2/4/14

890 Hours

Classroom Day: Start of Perms / Permanent Waves
For the third time I have Mrs J in classroom and its the second time in Rehearsal. I had her for the perm portion of workshop. She's also been on the floor for most of the perms I've done so far.
I just want to say that the instructors we have are a big part of why I don't mind perms so much. Even when I was short on time they've helped get me through without taking the learning out of it. But there's a little bit of special memories with the perm class from workshop that just make it Super Sparkly to have her again.

We did a little bit of theory for the morning session with splitting into groups and describing some things.
We also had some discussion about the upcoming Salon Fair in April. Then after lunch we set up for some timing of perms but it wasn't quite as high pressure as I thought it would be because for starters we have Mrs J. So I set up Deborah who has had more perm rods on her head than most manikins in history, I'm guessing. The game was to have the manikin section in 9 sections for the basic perm. Then Mrs J set her timer for 3.5 minutes. We had to finish any one section in that time. If we finished we could then do the next section. Otherwise we had to remove the rods and redo that section until we beat the clock. I missed the first section by about 3 seconds thanks to some distractions. I then proceded to beat the clock 8 times. But it was break time so I didn't get to do that last section. However I was not necessarily doing the best perm. I was not combing the hair out and I'm sure there were fishooks and such. Plus I was using the larger Orchid rods not the white or grey. After break no one wanted to do more perms so we had the option of working on MPAs or doing book work. I took the orchid rods out. Sectioned Deb back into 9. Set the timer for 45 minutes which is Rubric max time for the white rods. And using the orchid rods went to work. Mrs J said before break that we should be able to do a perm in 30 minutes. I put my comb down at 29. This time doing the perm the right way.
3.5 x 9 = 31.5
So that's 2 more perm credits out of the 80.
I'm sure there are people who can knock this perm out in half the time. But I'm going for personal bests. Now I have a new orchid best to beat. And I know I can. I will. I want it.
